Armstrong, Ohno, Wonder join anti-cancer telethon

August 20, 2010

By LYNN ELBER (AP) – 8 hours ago

LOS ANGELES — Lance Armstrong, Robin Roberts and Michael C. Hall are among the celebrities affected by cancer who will take part in a TV fundraiser next month.

“Stand Up to Cancer” announced Thursday appearances by other actors, athletes and musicians who have faced the disease, including Maura Tierney, Christina Applegate and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

Elizabeth Edwards, who kicked off the first “Stand Up to Cancer” telethon in 2008 with Armstrong, is taking part again.

One of the night’s musical performances will be led by Stevie Wonder and include Natasha Bedingfield, Queen Latifah, Martina McBride, Aaron Neville and Dave Stewart.

“Stand Up to Cancer” will air commercial-free Sept. 10 (8 p.m.-9 p.m. EDT) on the four major broadcast networks, ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC, as well as on a number of cable channels. News anchors Katie Couric, Diane Sawyer and Brian Williams are the hosts.

Others set to appear include Reese Witherspoon, Mandy Moore, Apolo Anton Ohno and Jim Parsons.

Film and TV producer Laura Ziskin (the “Spider-Man” franchise), a cancer survivor who produced the first telecast, has taken on the job again.

“On Sept. 10, we’ll send a resounding message: We can cure cancer. It’s going to take guts, brains and the ongoing support of the public, but we can do this,” Ziskin said.

The 2008 event helped deliver more than $100 million for research.

The American Association for Cancer Research, the scientific partner of Stand Up to Cancer, administers grants and provides scientific oversight in partnership with a Stand Up to Cancer advisory committee.

Stand Up to Cancer is a program of the Entertainment Industry Foundation, a nonprofit TV and film industry group that supports programs addressing health, education and social issues.

Telethon viewers will be asked to make donations by phone or on the Stand Up to Cancer website. All public donations go to cancer research, the group said.

Besides the broadcast networks, Bio, Discovery Health, E!, G4, HBO, HBO Latino, MLB Network, mun2, Showtime, Smithsonian Channel, The Style Network, TV One and VH1 also will simulcast the event.

More on Allison Baver and the Extreme Makeover build

EMHE Game Helps Heart Association
Dwayne Parker | Reporter

HAMBURG, Pa. — The American Heart Association received some star-studded support Monday afternoon.

The organization is working with Extreme Makeover: Home Edition to spread education and remember a life cut short.

From Hollywood to Hamburg, it wasn’t your average flag football game.

Christie Brinkley and Leigh Anne Tuohy, who inspired the story, “The Blindside,” were the coaches.

The football game was part of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.

The most recent winner, Trisha Urban of Tilden Township, lost her husband to a congenital heart defect.

Community members gave more than $2,600 to the American Heart Association, an important cause for Leigh Anne Tuohy, who lost her father to a heart attack.

“I thought it would be a wonderful idea to bring it all in and do something that Trisha was passionate about as well,” said Tuohy. “Since Andy (Trisha’s husband) passed away from a heart attack, it just seemed to be the right thing to do.

“And it’s so important that we let people know the risk factors and continue to educate them, do work within the community and the health care community as well,” said Laura Weis of the American Heart Association.

Refereeing the game was three-time Olympian Allison Baver and Olympic silver medalist Kristy Kowal, both of Berks County. And they said through every play, they were thinking about the Urban family.

“I know that when I broke my leg right before the Olympic games,” said Baver, “I didn’t have a team to get me through that time. I would have never been able to make that happen. So we are all here for her, supporting them.”

“So being able to come back and help out is one of the coolest things about being an Olympian,” said Kowal.

“I’m so happy that this story is going to have a new chapter, a happy ending,” said Brinkley.

You will have opportunities beyond anything we’ve ever known.”…
